If I’m going to vote on any day to become a national holiday it’s going to be Record Store Day, which happens to be this upcoming Saturday (April 17, 2010). For a vast a majority of you I don’t need to explain the importance of our local independent music stores but for those who don’t… These stores are the places you go to discover and talk about new/new to you music. Say for example if you like The Avett Brothers and/or The Roots and you walk into an independent music store and ask the person working there, “Hey, I really like The Avett Brothers and/or The Roots… could you suggest something similar?) 99.9% of the time they will have a perfect suggestion for you and a record or cd you could buy/listen to there. A computer just can’t pin-point that for you, that quick. I could sit at the Record Exchange in Winston and talk to Jonathan and Phred for hours about music, they have put me on to things I was unaware of. The people that own, manage and work at these places love music and that’s why they do it. The problem is, these places are disappearing. If I can ask a favor of everyone reading this post, visit one of these shops below this Saturday and help support them even if it’s a record or two out of the dollar bin. Help keep the independent record stores around for the next generations to enjoy!
